While there are many sub-races of Dwarves, the Dwarven race is consistently characterized by its unique industriousness. They make excellent engineers, and are well suited to tinkering, mining, stone-crafting, jewelry making, and general craftsmanship. The Dwarves insist this characteristic is due to their historical upbringing. Being stranded on Abumas, forced to either work, or starve. Over time, they learned how to conserve materials, and implement practices across generations to refine their crafts.

			This is made easier by their home planet Abumas, which is very earth-like in its structure in many ways, and habitable to most species. Across Abumas can be found vast deserts, large oceans, lush jungles, and a favorite of the Deepdwarves, large, underground, interconnected cave systems. It is unknown how these cave systems became so large and expansive, though this has not stopped the Dwarves, and their cousins the Deepdwarves from exploring their depths. At odds with this is a section of the planet characterized with large, sharp rock spires, reaching far up into the sky.

			Abumas's proximity to the Null Scar quickly brought the Dwarves into contact with NanoTrasen. The Dwarves were already a space-faring species upon first contact, and aided the early NanoTrasen fleets greatly in their navigation of the Starlight sector.

Early Dwarven history seems to share many similarities to that of human history. Tales of large, humanoid structures seem to predate depictions of early Dwarven construction. Historians argue about the origins of the Dwarven race, with Dwarven Sagebeard insisting that they share a common ancestor with humans. Sagebeards tell the story of how their ancestors were deposited by an unknown force onto their home planet Abumas near the Null Scar, and how the influence of the Scar changed their very biology. NanoTrasen's official statement is that the Dwarves have evolved separately from Humans, and their biology only vaguely resembles Human biology. One thing that is agreed upon by both of them, the Dwarves were among the first of the "extra-terrestrial" races to be contacted by NanoTrasen.

			Young Dwarves are often taught of how their ancestors came to Abumas, the name of the planet coming from the curse the first chieftain spat upon their arrival. Since then, Sagebeards have been employed to track the history of each clan, recanting the histories endlessly to beardlings, those trained to become the next Sagebeards of their clan.
